The Sword of the Hero 「
Himmel the Hero attempted to pull it out, but he failed. However, rumors spread that he defeated the Demon King with the legendary sword and only a small circle of people know the truth. Himmel wielded a replica of the Sword of the Hero that was originally commissioned by a merchant, who had it forged by the dwarven blacksmith Kiesel.
Appearance[]
The Sword of the Hero is a long, straight, double-edged blade with a midrib on the forte.[note 1] Its blade has a hexagonal cross section and is non-tapering, and it ends in a pointed tip.[note 2] The sword's hilt appears long enough for a two-handed hold. The hilt has a wrapped grip and merges into the crossguard. The crossguard is thick and has multiple layers, which extends horizontally on both sides in a simple, discontinued angular shape. The crossguard has an embedded oval-shaped stone in the center. The pommel—the rounded end of the hilt—has a simple, half-spherical shape.[1]
The Sword of the Hero instills in monsters an irresistible urge to destroy it, and they are terrified of the sword.[2]
The Replica[]
The replica of the sword appears to have an analogous structure and design to the real sword. It is fully functional and was used to defeat numerous monsters, including the Demon King.[3] Himmel keeps his sword in a plain scabbard that is attached to his left hip.

Synopsis[]
History of the Sword of the Hero[]
According to legend, at some point long ago, the Goddess of Creation bestowed humanity with the Sword of the Hero and embedded it in a sanctuary within holy grounds near the village.[4] The legend states that,
“ The Sword of the Hero can only be drawn by the Hero who shall drive away the great calamity that would bring destruction upon this world.
—The 49th chief of the Village of the Sword, in Chapter 25

Himmel is said to have drawn the Sword of the Hero on his quest to defeat the Demon King.
Throughout history, many heroes have attempted to pull the Sword of the Hero from the stone in the sanctuary. However, all of them have failed. During the adventure of the Hero Party, Himmel attempted to pull the sword from the stone. He, too, was unable to make it budge. Despite this, he remained undeterred and resolute in his decision to defeat the Demon King. The Hero Party and the grandmother of the 49th chief of the Village of the Sword agreed to keep his failure to pull out the sword a secret. Frieren promised the village chief to return periodically and subjugate monsters attracted to the sanctuary in order to maintain this secret.
History of the Replica[]
The replica of the Sword of the Hero was forged by the dwarven blacksmith Kiesel. At the beginning of Kiesel's career, the sword was commissioned by a merchant in the Royal Capital.[5] Himmel later acquired the sword as a token of gratitude from a peddler he saved from a monster near his remotely-located home village in the Central Lands.[6][7]
The replica was Himmel's lifelong companion until his death. He kept the replica alongside his hero attire in a display cabinet at his home in the Royal Capital.[note 3] At his funeral, the sword was placed with him in his coffin.[8]

Himmel passes away with his hands around his replica of the Sword of the Hero.
Travels to Äußerst Arc[]
Twenty-nine years after Himmel's death, Frieren's Party travels to the Village of the Sword in the Schwer Mountains, where Frieren has to fulfill the duty of exterminating monsters around the Sanctuary of the Sword of the Hero.[9]

Himmel reveals that his sword is a replica.
On the way to the Village of the Sword, Frieren has a flashback to traveling along with the Hero Party. The elf asked Himmel if the sword he carried is the Sword of the Hero, and Heiter responded that it is just a replica. Himmel said that he got it a long time ago as a token of gratitude from a peddler for saving him from a monster.[10] He thought to himself that he should become a real hero and acquire the real Sword of the Hero to take down the Demon King so he would not be called a fake hero with only a fake sword.[11]
After Frieren's party's arrival at the village, they are greeted by the 49th chief of the Village of the Sword. Stark tells the story of the village and the legend of the Sword of the Hero that was found near the village.[4] According to the legend, the Sword of the Hero was allegedly bestowed upon humanity by the Goddess of Creation and put in the nearby holy ground. Many heroes attempted to pull it out but failed until about 80 years ago, when Himmel extracted it.[12] The young village chief amends that the Sword of the Hero can only be drawn by the Hero who shall drive away the great calamity that would bring destruction upon this world. Stark reflects on how Himmel was said to have drawn the sword, but Fern comments that she has never heard Heiter mention the story before.[6]

Himmel fails to pull out the Sword of the Hero.
Frieren, Fern, and Stark arrive at the sanctuary and see monsters surrounding the entrance, which the party eliminates. They then slay the Lord of the Mountains.[13] Afterward, Stark is surprised to see Sword of the Hero is still in the cave, as he thought that Himmel had pulled it out of the stone. Frieren describes that monsters gather at this holy ground, because they cannot resist the urge to destroy the sword of Hero, which they are terrified of.[2] Frieren reveals that Himmel was unable to pull the sword out. She has a flashback of the Hero Party's visit to the cave and Himmel's subsequent failure to draw the sword. However, despite the failure, Himmel was determined to still defeat the Demon King and admitted to being a fake hero. Himmel's inability was later kept secret by people who wanted him to be seen as an untarnished hero, so he became glorified by future generations.[14] Having completed their task of subjugating monsters in the area, the party bids farewell to the village chief, with Frieren getting reminded to not be late again when she returns in half a century.[15]
Goddess's Monument Arc[]
Thirty-one years after the death of Himmel, Frieren is in the Northern Plateau, specifically the Kino Pass,[16] where, upon touching a Monument of the Goddess, she was sent back to the time when she adventured with the Hero Party. In the attempt to return to the present, the party searches for texts about the Goddess of Creation and the monuments,[17] but they are unable to find any useful information. When the quartet arrives at a newly settled village, a middle-aged man sends them to the village's blacksmith named Kiesel.[18]

Kiesel inspects the replica.
After an introduction between Himmel and the dwarf, Kiesel invites the party members into his home.[19] Heiter asks him information about the Monument of the Goddess, and Kiesel responds that he would not mind telling them, but in exchange, he wants to respectfully take a look at Himmel's sword.[20] When he inspects the sword, Kiesel gets nostalgic and remembers the beginning of his blacksmithing trade and how he was commissioned to forge the replica for a merchant of the Royal Capital.[5] The dwarf asks how Himmel acquired the blade, and Himmel responds that when he was a young boy living in a remote village in the Central Lands, he killed a monster and saved a peddler. As a token of gratitude, the peddler gifted him the sword. Kiesel thinks that the sword has returned to him and that its fate should have been to be stored away in some collector's closet. As a way to thank Himmel for returning the blade, the blacksmith offers him a replacement more worthy and better suited for a hero.[21] Himmel declines this offer, as he made up his mind to wield his sword until the Demon King is vanquished and the world is at peace.[22]
Kiesel accepts the hero's wish but requests to at least sharpen the blade in his workshop next door.[23] After he completes the job, he returns the blade, which the craftsman has polished to mirror-like quality. The Hero Party then bids farewell to Kiesel.[24]

- ↑ This is shown in Episode 1 of the anime.
