Frieren Wiki
Manual of Style
Conduct Policy
Blocking Policy

The following outlines the Manual of Style for Frieren Wiki, which describes the considerations for legibility, consistency, and accuracy that must be made while writing articles. These rules are subject to change any time without prior notice. Any further issue not stated here is up to the discretion of the wiki's staff team.

Discussion or questions regarding the Manual of Style can be discussed in the affiliated Discord or on the message walls of active administrators.

General Rules

Writing Style

  • Language: The content of this wiki must be expressed in English. This is an English language wiki and all edits are expected to be carried out in English with the following exceptions:
    • Japanese in {{Nihongo}} templates and corresponding romanization to display the raw names of names, abilities, titles, locations, and other relevant media.
    • German when referring to character names, abilities, titles, locations, trivia, and other relevant media.
  • American English: To avoid any inconsistencies, American English should be used over British English or any other national variant of the language. Fandom is a service based in the United States, and the majority of the wiki's readers are from the US.
  • Sources: All information added to this wiki should be only taken from the manga, anime, official websites and social media, official collaborations, official interviews, and the authors themselves: Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe.
    • If the original source does not have an official English translation, avoid using direct quotes or translated phrasing that may have multiple interpretations, and confirm specific details with a credible translator.
    • For details on how to properly reference sources, see the References section.
  • Canonicity: Do not add information that you have not confirmed is canon, with the sole exception being the trivia section. Currently, the wiki only considers the official manga and anime as canon content. This means that articles regarding all other derivative works, including those supervised by Kanehito Yamada or other Frieren staff, fall under non-canon content and should be denoted as such with the {{Canonicity}} template. This may be subject to change in the future and can be discussed in the affiliated Discord.
  • Localization and Translations: The official Viz English localization is to be used for the names of all series-relevant terminology and media. Other English localizations, such as Shogakukan Asia's, can be used in cases where there is no Viz translation.
    • Inaccurate translations: In the event that a Viz translation is confidently deemed to be inaccurate, it may be changed following a discussion with the wiki's administrators. If possible, the initial Viz translation should be listed elsewhere on the page for extra clarity surrounding the subject.
    • Anime-only content: In the case of anime-only content, the official English Blu-ray subtitles should be used.
    • Untranslated content: If the relevant content has not been officially translated yet by any English source, unofficial titles may be used as long as they are sensible and as close to the original Japanese meaning as possible. Please bring up the subject with an administrator before making any unofficially-titled pages.
  • Profanity: The use of profanity, slang, and derogatory euphemisms in articles is not permitted, unless it is used in the context of quotes from characters. Stronger derogatory language and slurs are not permitted at all.
  • Tenses: The tenses of articles/sections must be kept consistent with the following guidelines:
    • Character articles: All character articles should be written in present tense, including articles for deceased characters.
    • Synopsis sections: The History subsection of Synopsis sections should be written in past tense. Every other part of the synopsis should be written in present tense.
      • If the content of a section of a chapter or episode is a flashback to a previous story point, it should also be written in past tense.
  • Bias and Assumptions: Refrain from using personal bias or assumptions when editing articles, unless it is specifically mentioned within the series or by the author via a media platform.
    • Examples of personal bias and assumptions include the following:
      • "[Character 1] is the most attractive character": Personal bias, as the description stems from the writer's own perception of the character.
      • "[Character 1] is stronger than [Character 2], as [Character 1] defeated [Character 2] in battle": An assumption, as winning battles is not an objective indicator of strength and external factors may play a role.
    • Examples that are not considered personal bias or assumptions as they have been explicitly stated:

Grammar Specifics

The wiki follows specific grammar rules, and common examples include the following:

  • Use the Serial/Oxford comma for written lists of three or more, i.e. "Frieren, Fern, and Stark" and not "Frieren, Fern and Stark."
  • Punctuation should always be included inside quotation marks, i.e. "Text." and not "Text".
  • Use the possessive 's on proper nouns ending in s, z, and ss, i.e. "Goddess's" and "Stolz's," not "Goddess'" and "Stolz'."

Section Rules

Images and Media

See the Image Policy page for more information, or contact an administrator if you have any questions or concerns.

Trivia

  • General: Trivial but noteworthy information from volume extras, spin-offs, and the like may be added to relevant pages as long as it is accurate and officially endorsed. Additionally, for any non-canon content, the source and author should be explicitly stated. For example:
  • Voice Actors: Voice actor trivia should only ever be added to character pages if the character shares both their Japanese and English voice actors with a different character from a different Japanese anime/manga/game series. A link to this character and their series should then be added for viewer ease.
  • Comparing Series: Trivia comparing an aspect of the series to another series may only be added if Frieren genuinely seems to have taken inspiration from this piece of media. Such trivia may be removed at an administrator's discretion if they do not believe it is noteworthy or verifiable enough.

References

  • General: References should be added as often as possible to pages with specific information. They should always link to pages on the wiki or official outside sources, never to unofficial or fan-translated sites. When adding references, always use the {{Ref}} template. The complete list of parameters for this template can be found on its documentation page, but some common ones are:
    • Manga chapter: {{Ref|ch=#|pg=#}} (one page) or {{Ref|ch=#|pgs=#-#}} (multiple pages)
    • Anime episode: {{Ref|ep=#}}
    • Volume extras: {{Ref|vol=#|pg=extra}}

Page Layout Guide

Characters

Character pages are typically created when a relevant, named character is introduced. Less relevant characters should be included on the Minor Characters page. The structure for character pages is:

  • Lede (no header): The lede should always include the character's official name, both Viz's English translation and the equivalent Japanese and romanization.
  • Personality
  • Appearance
  • Synopsis (not applicable if there is a synopsis subpage)
  • Relationships (not applicable if there is a relationships subpage)
  • Abilities (if applicable)
  • Manga Appearance
  • Anime Appearance
  • Trivia (if applicable)
  • References
  • Site Navigation: {{Character Navigation}} should be used on all character pages.

Character Subpages

Character synopsis and relationship subpages can be created using the {{Tabs}} template, and this should only be done when the character's page has grown to the point of making it difficult to find information. Gallery subpages should be created when the character's page has both a profile and a portrait.

Chapters

New chapter pages should not be created before they are officially released by Viz. Chapters should be named by their chapter number, not their title. The structure for chapter pages is:

  • Lede (no header): The first sentence should always be of the format:
Chapter Title is the # chapter of Kanehito Yamada and Abe Tsukasa's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.
  • Summary: A short, 1-2 paragraph summary of the chapter's major events. Chapters that begin with narration of the year and location the chapter occurs should use the following format for the first sentence of the summary: "X years after the death of Himmel the Hero, Frieren's Party are in [location name]."
  • Plot Details: A detailed description of the chapter's plot.
  • Characters in Order of Appearance
  • Locations
  • Battles and Events (with subheaders Battles and Events)
  • Objects of Interest (with subheaders Spells and New Tools)
  • Chapter Notes (if applicable)
  • Site Navigation: {{Manga Navigation}} should be used on all chapter pages.

Images depicting major events that take place in the chapter may be included and are preferred in order to have a visual representation of the chapter. However, there should not be more besides what is necessary so as to not clutter the page, and they should only be added if they are relevant to the content of the text they're placed by.

Episodes

Episode pages may be created as soon as their episode titles are revealed, but they should remain empty of any unconfirmed information until the episode is legally available in English. Episodes should be named by their episode number, not their title. This should be their chronological number and should not take into account the season they belong to (e.g. "Episode 29" over "Season 2 Episode 1"). The structure for episode pages is:

  • Lede (no header): The first sentence should always be of the format:
Episode Title is the # episode of the Frieren: Beyond Journey's End anime series.
  • Synopsis: The official description of the episode, typically provided by Crunchyroll.
  • Plot: A detailed description of the episode's plot.
  • Characters in Order of Appearance
  • Locations in Order of Appearance
  • Episode Notes
  • Site Navigation: {{Anime Navigation}} should be used on all episode pages.

Images and gifs depicting major events that take place in the episode may be included and are preferred in order to have a visual representation of the episode. However, there should not be more besides what is necessary so as to not clutter the page, and they should only be added if they are relevant to the content of the text they're placed by.
