It Would Be Embarrassing When We Met Again 「また
Synopsis[]
As the first-class mage exam concludes and the test-takers go their separate ways, farewell leads to departure - but the next stage of Frieren's journey has only just begun.[1]
Plot[]
During her interview with Serie for the third and final stage of the First-Class Mage Exam, Fern firmly declines Serie's offer to become her apprentice, stating that she is Frieren's apprentice. Serie accepts Fern's decision and passes her. Meanwhile, Frieren waits for Fern outside of the Continental Magic Association and yawns.

Serie tells Denken that she wished he was in his prime.
The next examinee to approach Serie is Denken. Serie acknowledges him and his position as an Imperial Mage, and in return, he expresses that he is honored. Serie mentions that she often hears about Denken, who started out as a military mage and is now considered the most authoritative mage of the Northern Lands, but she confesses that she had hoped to meet a younger, more ambitious Denken, and she has lost interest in the aged mage he has become. However, Serie retracts her previous statement when she realizes that Denken envisioned fighting her, though Denken admits that he resigned from the idea in an instant. Satisfied, Serie decides to pass Denken and explains that most people would not even dare to think about fighting her.
Übel is the next candidate to be interviewed, and Serie instantly passes her upon seeing her. Übel remarks that she has yet to speak with her, but Serie rhetorically asks if there is a need. Übel confirms that there is not, and Serie calls for the next examinee to enter.

Serie reveals Land's real body is still at his home village.
After Übel takes her leave, Land is the next to stand before Serie. An unamused Serie brings up that Land has not taken a single step onto the examination grounds. In response, Land reveals a second clone, which he claims is his real body as he would not want to be disqualified from the exam. Serie sees through his bluff and corrects him, pointing out that Land's real body has never left his home village. She looks towards the direction of his village, where the real Land is located. Land's real body voices his surprise at Serie's observation, and his clone near the door notes that even Übel did not notice. Serie is impressed with his audacity and passes him.
Wirbel is the next examinee, and Serie identifies him as the captain of the Northern Magic Corps, considering him to be the greatest combatant among all of the second-class mages. Serie observes that Wirbel considered her to be an unbeatable enemy at first glance, but he did not make the judgment out of fear. Wirbel explains that a fool who would choose to fight an unwinnable battle would not even make it to the rank of second-class mage, which Serie agrees with. Serie asks what kind of magic Wirbel likes, and the latter responds that magic is a tool used to kill, so there is none that he likes or dislikes. This response delights Serie, and she passes Wirbel.

Methode earns a pass with her response.
The last examinee to be interviewed by Serie is Methode, who stands before her and stares intently at her. Serie asks Methode what she was thinking when she observed her, and Methode replies that she thought Serie was small and cute. A baffled Serie wonders what is wrong with this year's examinees and passes Methode.
After the conclusion of Serie's interviews, she leaves her garden and is joined by Sense. Serie offers her apologies to Sense and expresses her satisfaction with the abundance of passing candidates. Meanwhile, some of the examinees gather in the lobby of the building complex. While Wirbel consoles the dejected Scharf and Ehre, Land heads straight to the exit of the building and comments to Übel to stop following him. Kanne sits crestfallen on another bench and contemplates the next exam in three years' time. Outside, Frieren congratulates Fern for passing and pats her head. Denken notices the duo and calls out to Frieren, thanking both her and Fern for allowing him to get closer to his goals, as he now plans to return to his hometown and visit his wife's grave. Frieren responds with a smile.

Denken thanks Frieren and Fern.
Later, Fern and Stark are inside the Sun Bakery as Fern tries to decide on a pastry. When Fern eventually selects a basket of pastries, she looks up to see Laufen pointing at the same basket, with Denken standing at the entrance behind them. This chance get-together prompts Denken to treat all of them to pastries. The four of them sit outside, and Denken encourages the others to enjoy the pastries and not worry about him, mentioning that he rarely had the chance to savor sweets when he was young. While Fern thanks Denken, Stark asks himself what is going on. Denken hands the puzzled Stark a plate of the pastries, and Stark casually thanks him before inquiring Fern about the identity of the older gentleman. Fern introduces Denken as an Imperial Mage, startling Stark, and he promptly apologizes for his informal language towards the nobleman. However, Denken dismisses his apology and explains that he arrived in the town as a mage, not as a noble.

Denken recalls his late wife.
Stark mentions that he is an unrelated party for Denken to treat, and Denken responds by saying that he has no other use for his money. Fern and Stark express doubt that there is nothing else, citing grandchildren as an example. Denken explains that he has no offspring, as his wife, who had always been in poor health, passed away when he was only in his mid-twenties. He goes on to reveal that his wife was a noble's daughter from a remote region in the Northern Plateau, which was in the midst of political strife, and he was desperate for wealth and influence to save her. Denken adds that he had never felt so helpless as when Serie established the Continental Magic Association and advertised its special privilege shortly after his wife's death. He reflects on the irony of the situation, considering that he is now influential enough to command a country. Denken addresses Fern and tells her that for the longest time, magic had been a tool to resolve conflict for him. He asks Fern to convey to Frieren that, for the first time in a while, he was reminded about how enjoyable magic could be. Fern encourages Denken to tell Frieren herself and assures him that she would be pleased to hear it. Denken agrees and plans to do just that.

Wirbel talks with Frieren.
In another part of the city, Frieren expresses her content with her purchase of grimoires and that she expected nothing less from the Magical Town of Äußerst. An elderly woman accidentally drops a basket of fruits not far away from Frieren, and the elf watches as she struggles to collect the scattered fruit. Wirbel calls out to the woman and uses magic to help gather the fruits back into the basket. Afterward, he approaches Frieren, who is reading in a grimoire, and he asks her why she would ignore the elderly woman's situation. Frieren admits that she was briefly concerned, and Wirbel expresses mild surprise at her response, mentioning that she was a comrade of Himmel the Hero. Frieren bluntly asks Wirbel to clarify what he means and adds that she should be the one surprised, as Fern complained about how Wirbel attempted to kill Fern and her team during the first stage of the exam. She also brings up that Fern described him as someone who would kick dogs, but Wirbel is unfazed at her comment and states that he has heard such things before, and he was simply making threats during the exam. However, as he recalls his skirmish with Übel, he considers that there is one person whose death would make the world a better place.

Wirbel remembers when he finally understood the true impact of Himmel's assistance.
Wirbel reveals that in order to protect his hometown, the special privilege of being granted any magic he desired was his primary motivation for becoming a first-class mage, believing that the more powerful his magic, the more demons he can defeat. However, he emphasizes that he will still lend a hand to others whenever possible, even if doing so does not directly lead to him achieving his goal. Frieren questions why, and Wirbel is slightly taken aback but continues to speak. He explains that his hometown is at the Northern Frontier, and he has heard many stories about Himmel's feats there, such as the conquest of the Thousand Mirror Tower, the battle with Böse the Immortal, and the encounter with the Hell Emperor Dragon. Wirbel explains that when he was a child, he enjoyed reading stories of said exploits. However, the elderly residents in his village would not talk about these heroic feats, but rather, they would reminisce to the young Wirbel about Himmel's seemingly bland actions such as eliminating monsters around villages, escorting merchants, and helping with carrying goods, and they always talked of these accounts from the bottom of their hearts. Wirbel describes that after Himmel's death, demons attacked his village, and only in the carnage after did he finally understand that the epic tales of the Hero Party were irrelevant to his village, as everyone had their hands full just maintaining their daily life. Wirbel asserts his belief that if Himmel had not visited his village, it would not exist even if the world became peaceful.

Frieren recalls a time when the Hero Party lent assistance.
Frieren listens to Wirbel and asks what he is trying to say, and he declares that the seemingly small stories about Himmel were what guided him. He concludes his story and prepares to take his leave, as Ehre and Scharf were waiting for him. Before he departs, Wirbel urges Frieren to treasure the people that she meets, as final farewells do not always happen because of death, and he surmises that Frieren is probably all too aware of the same. This prompts Frieren to recall a memory of the Hero Party assisting a merchant, where Eisen urged Himmel that they had to defeat the Demon King as soon as possible and asked what the point of lending such trivial assistance was. To Frieren's surprise, Himmel agreed that their help was truly trivial and would not make a change in the grand scheme of things, however, he had no intention of forsaking anyone who required his help. After recalling this, Frieren says that Himmel does not need to worry and remarks that the world has changed.
Later that day, Frieren, Fern, and Stark reunite at their inn, and Fern explains that the special privilege conferment ceremony will be occurring that night. She notes that since the mages are allowed to bring companions, Stark and Frieren should come along with her. Fern looks toward Frieren and says to herself that Frieren is making an extremely reluctant face about the idea.

Frieren is reluctant to attend the privilege ceremony.
At sunset, a dejected Frieren looks on as Fern informs the receptionist at the Continental Magic Association that she was told she could bring companions. The receptionist apologizes and states that Serie has decreed that Frieren is to be forbidden entry into any Continental Magic Association facilities for the next millennium. Fern is displeased and wonders what Frieren did, and Frieren explains that Serie took offense to what she said during her interview, adding that Serie behaves like a child. Frieren says she will wait outside, adding that she did not particularly wish to attend the ceremony in the first place. Stark tells Fern that he will accompany Frieren outside, causing Fern to smile as the two leave.

Frieren considers that Fern might become a more famous mage than her.
Frieren and Stark wait outside, and as the evening bell rings, Stark remarks that the mages should be done receiving their privileges soon. Frieren reflects on Fern's achievements and brings out her Holy Emblem, adding that not even fifty mages have reached the status of first-class and Fern may one day become a more famous mage than her. As Frieren and Stark continue waiting, Lernen approaches them and calls out to Frieren. Frieren identifies him to Stark, and Lernen introduces himself as a first-class mage and one of Serie's apprentices. He proceeds to apologize that Serie must have caused trouble for Frieren, but Frieren brushes it off as Serie has been always like that. Frieren notices that Lernen can see the instability in her mana, adding that he is incredibly skilled and unsuited for a peaceful era. Lernen agrees, stating that he is old-fashioned and only knows how to battle. Lernen explains that Serie has often told him that he would have made a mark in history if he had been born during the era of war against Demon King's forces.

Lernen requests a duel from Frieren.
When Frieren asks what this has to do with her, Lernen states that the only apprentice of Serie who made a mark on history was the Great Mage Flamme. Lernen believes that he is living proof of Serie's existence, and once he dies, this proof will disappear and he does not wish such desolation for his master. To this end, he says that he will bear the notoriety of killing the legendary Frieren and immediately casts offensive spells at Frieren. In response, Frieren casts a defensive spell, and although her defense shatters under the force of Lernen's attack, she is able to evade it using flying magic. However, she does is unable to stop the full force of Lernen's magic, and one of his blasts strikes her shoulder. Lernen stops attacking and asks Frieren to duel. Stark moves in between the two mages and Frieren rejects Lernen's challenge, remarking that it would be a waste of time. She states that tactless mages who only know how to battle can be awkward and explains that there is no need for him to leave a mark in history because Serie will remember him.

Serie recalls Lernen's favorite spell.
Frieren reflects on her interview with Serie, where she noticed that the flowers in Serie's garden were conjured with a spell that produces a field of flowers, the very same magic that Flamme loved despite Serie decrying it as useless. Serie stared at the flowers before frankly explaining that Flamme was a failure who could not reach Serie's height despite her talents. After Flamme, Serie took on more students, but most died before reaching Serie's level. Serie remarked that it was strange that despite taking on all of her students on a whim, she could vividly remember their personalities and favorite spells. Serie asserted that she had not once regretted taking on disciples even if they failed to leave a mark on history.
In the present, Frieren tells Lernen that Serie is childlike and is incapable of honestly expressing her feelings to her apprentices. Shortly after, Fern approaches Frieren and tells her that she has received her privilege. As they leave, Fern asks Frieren why she has a damaged shoulder, and Frieren does not explain it and simply remarks that she will need to get it healed at the church. Lernen watches as the trio departs and comments to himself that both he and Serie are awkward individuals.

Frieren's party departs from Äußerst.
The next day, Frieren's Party prepares to depart Äußerst and continue on their journey. In the process, many townsfolk dote on Stark, with the old man who was there when Stark meditated bidding him farewell. As Frieren's party leaves the city, Frieren comments that is it time to say goodbye to Äußerst as they walk through the gate onto the bridge. Stark waves back to the townsfolk and Fern notes that people love him wherever he goes. Out of curiosity, Frieren asks Fern what spell she received during the ceremony, and Fern spins and asks if Frieren can tell. Frieren examines Fern's clean clothing and says the garment smells vaguely floral, but before she can answer, Fern proudly says she received a spell to make clothes clean and spotless, which will make laundry much easier to do. Frieren remarks that Serie is truly a living grimoire as the spell is a legendary one from the mythical era, and she praises a happy Fern. Fern adds that Serie looked incredibly dissatisfied and asked Fern if she was insane when she handed over the spell, which prompts Frieren to say that it served her right.

Fern shows off the spell she received from Serie.
As the three continue on, they meet Kanne and Lawine, who were waiting on the bridge to give their thanks to Frieren despite having failed the exam, and they tell her that they will try again in three years. Lawine adds that it had been fun, and Kanne tells Frieren to stay healthy. The two groups then bid their farewells to each other.

Himmel explains why he bids short farewells.
After the interaction, Fern notes that Frieren seems to bid farewell easily, as she noticed Frieren had a similarly short farewell with Sein, and Stark adds that it was the same with Kraft. Frieren recalls a time when the Hero Party bade farewell to someone they had been traveling with for two weeks, where she similarly noted that Himmel seemed to bid farewell easily. Eisen added that it seemed out of character for Himmel, as they had spent two weeks together with the man. Himmel responded that he was sure they would meet again if they continued their journey, and he explained that a tearful farewell would only make it embarrassing when they met again.
After this memory, Frieren reflects on her new journey starting with the Royal Capital, the graveyard where Heiter was buried, Eisen praying over graves, and Flamme's dwelling with the thousand year old tree. Meanwhile, the other examinees go on their separate paths: Kanne and Lawine stay on the bridge, Ehre introduces her grandfather, Lernen, to Wirbel and Scharf, Denken has a meal with Laufen and Richter, Methode, Länge, and Ton leave Äußerst by carriage together, and Übel walks alone. Elsewhere, Kraft walks through a town, Sein smokes on a beach, and Flamme's gravestone is seen surrounded by a field of flowers. As she continues on with her party, Frieren answers Fern's previous observation by telling her that it would be embarrassing when they met again, and Fern asks what the statement means.
