Synopsis[]
The world celebrates the Demon King's defeat at the hands of the Hero and his companions. Now that their great adventure is over, what will Frieren the mage do next?[1]
Plot[]

The Hero Party returns to the Royal Capital.
The Hero Party, consisting of Frieren the Mage and her companions Himmel the Hero, Heiter the Priest, and Eisen the Warrior. They return to the Royal Capital after triumphantly defeating the Demon King. On their way, Himmel suggests that despite their achievements, they still need to seek employment upon their arrival and continue forward with their lives. He tells Frieren that the life ahead of her will be much longer than theirs, which she nonchalantly agrees with. The heroes reach the city amidst a large celebration in their honor and receive recognition from the King.

The Hero Party watches the Era Meteors at the Royal Capital.
That night, they enjoy a festival held by the townsfolk, during which Himmel informs the others that the King intends to erect statues of them in the plaza. The Hero Party reminisce on their journey and the humorous moments that had occurred throughout it, finding it hard to believe that it has come to an end after ten years. Himmel expresses his gratitude towards his companions for the time he spent and the memories he made on the journey with them. Frieren points out that they spent a mere ten years together, surprising Himmel. They all look up into the sky to witness the Era Meteors, an event that occurs only once every fifty years, and Himmel decides to label it as the start of an era of peace. Frieren proposes that she brings the party to a better location for viewing the meteors the next time they occur, and Himmel laughs and accepts the offer.

Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen see Frieren off.
The next day, Himmel and the others accompany Frieren to a bridge to bid her farewell. She informs them that she plans on traveling through the Central Lands for the next century and collect spells, though she may visit them every now and then. As she departs, Himmel wonders about the life she will lead, and Heiter refers to how time passes differently for her.

Frieren on her solo journey.
Frieren immerses in various experiences and activities during her solo journey for the next fifty years. She visits a shop in an attempt to obtain a Shadow Dragon's Horn, but the shop owner informs her that the shop does not have one. Frieren remembers that the Hero Party found a horn during their exploration of the Demon King's castle and she had left it with Himmel for safekeeping. With the next occurrence of the Era Meteors approaching, Frieren decides to head back to the Royal Capital and retrieve it from him upon their reunion.

An aged Himmel greets Frieren upon her return.
Upon returning to the city, Frieren is shocked by how much it has changed. When Himmel reunites with her, she is equally surprised by how much he has aged. Himmel reminds the elf Frieren that fifty years have passed, though he remarks that she still looks the same. He presents the shadow dragon's horn to Frieren, stating that he had always intended to return it to her someday. She and Himmel then prepare for the upcoming Era Meteors at Himmel's home.

The Hero Party watches the Era Meteors once again.
The two reunite with Heiter, who is now a bishop in the Holy City, and Eisen, and Frieren notices that while Heiter has also aged considerably, Eisen's appearance remains relatively unchanged due to his longer dwarven lifespan. Frieren informs them that it will take a week to reach the location with a better view of the Era Meteors, which disappoints Himmel. As they adventure to the location, Himmel reflects on their memories and how much he had missed traveling with his comrades. The reunited party arrives at a giant lake underneath a clear sky, and as they once again watch the Era Meteors, Himmel expresses gratitude to Frieren for providing him with a wonderful final adventure.

Himmel passes away.
Shortly after, Himmel passes away, and the remaining members of the Hero Party attend his funeral. As the bishop, Heiter holds his funeral. In his coffin, Himmel is surrounded by flowers and dressed in his hero's attire with his sword. During the procession, Heiter mentions to Frieren and Eisen that Himmel was happy. Numerous civilians gather to pay their respects, and Frieren overhears people gossiping about her apparent lack of emotion at the passing of one of her companions. Heiter defends Frieren, reminding them that he and Eisen were also Himmel's allies and yet, they are not expressing sadness. As Himmel is buried, Frieren reminisces about the time she spent with him. Despite only traveling with him, merely for ten years, Frieren begins to cry, regretting not getting to know Himmel better. Heiter and Eisen offer her comfort.

Frieren cries over Himmel's death.
After the funeral, Frieren and Eisen bid farewell to Heiter, who is returning to the Holy City. Before leaving, Heiter jokes about the possibility of this event being the last time he will see them, prompting Frieren to question if he is unafraid of passing away. Heiter reminds Frieren that they are legendary heroes and believes they will lead a good life in Heaven after death. After Heiter departs, Frieren confides in Eisen that she plans to learn more about humans and asks if he can accompany her. He reminds her that he is too old and his age will be a hindrance in combat, however, he reassures her that his life has slowed down past his prime. They bid farewell to each other and go their separate ways.

Fern greets Frieren.
Twenty years after Himmel's death, Frieren finds herself lost in the woods at the outskirts of the Holy City in the Central Lands. A young girl discovers Frieren and guides her to Heiter's residence, where Frieren is astonished to discover that Heiter is still alive. Heiter introduces the girl as Fern and reveals that she is a war orphan from the Southern Lands. Frieren explains that she had been traveling the continent to learn about humans but stopped by to repay her debt to Heiter before his death. Heiter asks if Frieren could mentor Fern as an apprentice given that Fern shows potential as a mage, but Frieren declines, fearing that Fern's inexperience would hinder her. Additionally, she points out that apprentice mages frequently die in battle, and she cannot allow for that to happen to Fern.

Heiter tasks Frieren with deciphering Sage Ewig's grimoire.
Heiter acknowledges Frieren's decision and asks if she can instead decipher a grimoire depicting immortality and resurrection that was written by Ewig the Sage. Frieren accepts his request and tells him she can finish deciphering the grimoire in five to six years, though she wonders why he is interested in the topic despite having been unafraid of death twenty years ago. He jokingly tells her that the holy texts say to live healthy lives, and he now admits that he now fears death the more he approaches it and simply wishes for more time. He asks Frieren to teach Fern magic in her spare time, and Frieren concedes.

Fern prepares to fire at the rock.
Frieren goes to look for Fern and finds her by a cliff overlooking a ravine. She tells the young girl that she had trouble looking for her, but Fern points out that being difficult to find is a good thing. Frieren agrees and wonders to herself how Fern had established a high level of mana control at such a young age. Fern informs Frieren that Heiter mentioned she would be close to becoming a proper mage when she could blast a large rock at the opposite end of the ravine. As Frieren endorses the method, Fern immediately casts a beam of offensive magic that nearly hits the rock. She explains to Frieren that her magic dissipates before making contact and asks how she should train it. Before Frieren gives her advice, she asks if Fern enjoys magic, and Fern admits that she somewhat likes it. Frieren notes they are alike in that sense.
