Discussions (はな) () Hanashiai? is the eighty-sixth chapter of Kanehito Yamada and Abe Tsukasa's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

Summary[]

Denken reveals that he has been able to enter and leave the Golden Land as well as converse with Macht because he is a citizen of the Fortress City of Weise, thereby binding Macht to "serve" him. As a result, Macht presumably cannot kill him. When asked why he persists with meaningless talks, Denken explains it is because he wants to return the Golden Land to normal. Since Macht's magic remains even after he perishes, Denken cannot kill him even if he managed to find a way to do so. Frieren then asks to join the talks, saying she wants to confirm something by seeing Macht face-to-face.

The four of them go to see Macht inside the Fortress City of Weise. Frieren tries to instigate a fight with Macht upon meeting him again, but Denken stops Macht from escalating. Afterwards, Macht serves them tea and they have a brief conversation. However, when questioned why he keeps killing people even though he wants to coexist, Macht seems confused as to the point of the question, which leads Frieren to conclude they will never be able to understand each other. As they leave, Frieren asks Denken about the relationship between him and Macht. Denken replies that Macht used to be his magic teacher.

Plot Details[]

Denken reveals that he was a citizen of the Fortress City of Weise, which was not populous. The others then recall that there were two commands placed on Macht through the Stone Bracelet of Servitude, "to serve the people of Weise and their descendants" and "to not commit malicious acts against the people of Weise." Even though as a demon, Macht does not register the meaning of "malice," the first command, "to serve," would still take effect. They conclude that is why Denken could survive going into the Golden Land and wonders if that meant Macht would listen to Denken's commands. Frieren however thinks it is not such a favorable circumstance, which Denken confirms. Macht will not pose any harm to him, but he also will not accept any forceful commands.

Frieren questions why he would persist with something so pointless as conversation with a demon. Denken explains his wish to recover his homeland, and that Macht's magic, Diagoldze, will persist even after his death, meaning that the Golden Land can only be reverted by Macht himself. He says that Macht is aware of the value of his life and will not return the Golden Land to normal at any cost, forcing Denken to keep him alive in a stalemate.

When he is about to leave for the Golden Land, Frieren asks to join him. Denken tells her Macht will not harm her if he introduces her as his friend, but it is not certain. Frieren still insists on going, saying that it is a better approach than persisting with pointless talks and that she wants to confirm something. Fern and Stark, upon hearing this, also volunteer to go, with Stark claiming that he is confident with running away and can rescue both of them should things go south. Before they meet Macht, Frieren reassures them they are only going for a conversation, but apologizes to them in advance.

The party meets Macht in the center of the Fortress City of Weise, where he waits by the gate and welcomes them respectfully. As they enter the mansion, he asks Denken about the newcomers. The latter says they are his friends and commands Macht to treat them kindly. Macht obeys and greets the three of them politely, introducing himself as "the magic instructor of the Glück family". Frieren replies that it is not their first meeting, which was in fact six hundred years ago when she first fought him. When Macht does not show any sign that he remembers the encounter, Frieren escalates, challenging the demon to a battle. However, before Macht can respond, Denken commands him to stand down.

Afterwards, in a living room, Macht serves the humans tea, saying that he kept the tea set intact because Lord Glück used to be fond of them. He asks Frieren what she wants to confirm about him, to which she answers that they cannot defeat him, and that he is not completely flawless. Surprised to be provoked once again, Macht asks Denken about her identity. Once he learns that Frieren was the mage of the party which had slain the Demon King, he only comments that long ago, Denken was fond of the Hero Party's adventure stories. Frieren asks him if he intends to avenge the Demon King, to the astonishment of Stark, and Macht replies that he genuinely does not care about the Demon King's Army. He claims that he was a moderate in the Demon King Army who wanted to achieve coexistence with humans, even before he was equipped with the Stone Bracelet of Servitude. When Frieren expresses doubt at the sentiment, Macht agrees with her reasoning that demons always lie, but affirms his goals and asks for confirmation from Denken, who has read his memories and verifies Macht's statement. Upon learning this information, Frieren becomes more dismayed, criticizing Macht for refusing to return the Golden Land to normal and killing all intruders without mercy. More importantly, she asks him why he has killed so many people and keeps killing people even though he wishes for coexistence. Macht expresses confusion at this question, which leads Frieren to conclude that they are too different as species and will never come to an understanding.

At Denken's prompt, the party proceeds to leave the encounter unscathed. Frieren asks Denken about his relationship with Macht, stating that they seemed to be close. Denken replies that Macht was a mage of the Glück family, the feudal lord of Weise, and once served as his magic teacher.
