The Great Tor Canyonトーア (だい) (けい) (こく) Tōa daikeikoku? is the seventy-ninth chapter of Kanehito Yamada and Abe Tsukasa's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

Summary[]

Thirty years after the Hero Himmel’s passing, Frieren’s Party is at the Great Tor Canyon, and is unable to cross it safely. They encounter the dwarf Gehen and his bridge, but are informed that giant bird monsters have made it dangerous to cross. Gehen requests Frieren to exterminate the monsters in exchange for a spell to perfectly flip pancakes, and Frieren accepts the quest. When Stark asks Frieren why Gehen has chosen to build a bridge across the canyon, Frieren explains that Gehen’s village had been destroyed by demons, and the nearest soldiers were across the canyon and unable to help. After destroying the nest, Frieren asks Gehen what he plans on doing now that his task is complete, and Gehen responds by saying that he will spend the rest of his life at the new village, to Frieren’s surprise.

Plot Details[]

Thirty years after the Hero Himmel’s passing, Frieren's Party is blocked from passing the three-kilometer deep Great Tor Canyon by high winds and poor detour paths, with a mountain pass upstream and a massive cliff downstream, which she suggests they visit for the picturesque scenery. Frieren decides to go upstream, believing that there might be a new path across the canyon, and finds the dwarf Gehen’s bridge, with Gehen sitting by it. Frieren introduces Gehen as a dwarf who has worked on the bridge for two centuries, but expresses her surprise that the bridge was finished, as there had been no rumors about the bridge. Gehen explains that giant bird monsters have been causing great winds across the bridge, and a group of merchants looking for the Golden Land had even been swept away. Gehen promises a spell to perfectly flip pancakes, along with the ingredients, in exchange for their help in exterminating a giant bird monster nest, and Frieren accepts.

On the way to the nest, Stark asks Frieren why Gehen decided to build a bridge across the canyon. Frieren explains that Gehen’s village had been destroyed by demon attacks, with the nearest garrison on the other side of the canyon. Gehen had run out of funds to complete the bridge, but Himmel had provided him with the money obtained from retrieving a noble’s sword from a demon. Gehen found it difficult to accept the money, as Himmel would be dead long before the bridge was complete, but Himmel told Gehen that Frieren would accept the reward in his stead.

Frieren’s party exterminates the nest, and receives the grimoire from Gehen. When Frieren asks what Gehen plans to do now that his bridge is finished, Gehen responds by saying he will spend the rest of his life in his village. Frieren is surprised, and Gehen explains that two centuries is more than enough time for another village to be created.
