Serie laments Flamme's childhood longings CH138

Serie laments Flamme's childhood longings and her forgotten history.

As Serie arrives at Eiseberg, she tells a hidden Falsch that he does not need to act as her bodyguard. Falsch appears from a shadow and requests to escort her through the empire, producing a cloak that conceals her appearance. They wander around the city and arrive at a statue that poorly depicts Flamme, where Serie laments that despite Flamme's contributions to the Empire, she is not remembered by the people. Serie considers how she is now the only one who remember Flamme's smile and longing from when she was a young girl.

Sense describes the structure of the Shadow Warriors CH138

Sense describes the structure of the Shadow Warriors.

The first-class mages reconvene with Sense, and she reveals that they are up against the Shadow Warriors, which Frieren, Übel, and Land identify as a major threat given that the warriors are an official organization under the Empire. Sense corrects them: the Shadow Warriors were disbanded sixteen years prior by the previous Emperor due to their unconventional structure and ambiguous chain of command, which gave them acting power without needing to follow direct orders. As a result, they were powerful and could make judgements and coordinate effectively, acting as if they were a single creature. Fern agrees that the warriors' teamwork during their previous battle was noteworthy.

Stark wonders if such an organization could be dangerous, and Frieren inquires if she is dangerous considering she is the commander of their party. Stark denies this, and Frieren concludes that the level of threat is based on the commander, meaning they must be carefully selected. Sense concurs, and she reveals that the commanders are chosen based on their loyalty to the Empire, a method both she and Frieren criticize. Sense describes how the people and the Empire's ideals were misaligned, and the Shadow Warriors stopped serving the Empire's will, which led them to eliminate individuals they considered obstructive. Subsequently, they were disbanded, considering their threat to the Empire.

Land talks about the authority of the Shadow Warriors' commanders CH138

Land talks about the authority of the Shadow Warriors' commanders.

When Stark comments on the fact they faced the Shadow Warriors despite their supposed disbanded, Land responds that the Empire was likely unable to completely disband them, and the ones they faced are phantoms that even the Emperor was not aware of. Übel chimes in that the Shadow Warriors all pledged loyalty to the Empire, and they likely thought that without the Shadow Warriors, nobody could lead the Empire, so they felt they had to direct the Empire towards the correct direction. Fern realizes that if this was the case, they would be considered traitors.

Weg reports the presence of the Shadow Warriors to Kanone and Neu CH138

Weg reports the presence of the Shadow Warriors to Kanone and Neu.

In Kanone's office, Weg reports that the Shadow Warriors were involved in the battle, which would make Serie's assassination scheme more credible. Kanone agrees with Weg's idea to increase security and emphasizes that they must deal with any disruptions, regardless of the source. Weg tells her that negotiations will need to be done with the association that manages security, and although this is normally Captain's Fräse's job, she is nowhere to be found. Displeased at the increased workload, Kanone tosses a paper ball at Neu out of annoyance.

Lineal makes Serie kneel in a mock battle CH138

Lineal makes Serie kneel in a mock battle.

Falsch enters the meeting with the first-class mages and delivers Lineal's findings, which consists of personal information about each of the Shadow Warriors. Sense mentions that their next encounter with Lineal might be with her corpse given she is venturing into dangerous territory to gather information. However, Sense describes her as an extremely skilled mage that has managed to make Serie kneel during a mock battle, a feat even Lernen was unable to achieve. She adds that her capabilities are likely why she was given the dangerous mission, and among human battles, she considers Lineal the most skilled.

The mages continue looking over the profiles of the warriors, and Frieren identifies Gazelle and Wehrlos. Sein stares at the list, which Stark notices, prompting Stark to ask what was wrong. Sein responds that it was nothing, but he continues looking at the list of Shadow Warriors, which appears to include a profile of Gorilla.
