Frieren Wiki

Repel (げき) 退 (たい) Gekitai? is the one hundred and thirty-seventh chapter of Kanehito Yamada and Abe Tsukasa's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

Summary[]

Fern uses the cover of the nightly fireworks to avoid Wolf's arrows and fly high into the sky. She is able to detect Lore's mana when the nun tries to attack her, and knocks Lore out with Zoltraak. This attracts the attention of the Magic Special Forces. After the fight, Wolf and Gazelle recover Lore, and Frieren's Party rendezvous with the other first-class mages. Übel and Land give Sense the intel they have recovered from Lineal. Meanwhile, Serie finally arrives in Eiseberg, and muses that it's ironic she's come to the magical civilization built up by Flamme under such circumstances.

Plot Details[]

Frieren's Party shields themselves behind furniture after Gazelle's attack and plan their next strategy. Frieren tries to come up with a method for Fern to get a visually clear shot on Lore without destroying buildings, and she proposes that Fern fly up into the air to shoot. Sein comments on the risk of such a move, and Frieren agrees, as Fern could easily get shot by a poisoned arrow and defensive spells are still penetrable by a skilled archer's arrows. Fern realizes what happened at the same time the day before and wonders if mana detection could be used to pinpoint the timing. Frieren considers her proposal and decides they can try it out.

The fireworks are set off CH137

The fireworks are set off, obstructing Wolf's vision.

Gazelle watches the stationary party from afar and asks if he should take action. Lore advises him not to, as they are about to move. Subsequently, Fern quickly flies into the air, and Wolf notes her lack of defense as he prepares to shoot her down. However, fireworks are let off in the sky at that moment, obstructing Wolf's vision. Gazelle realizes Fern is likely going for their control tower, and Wolf instructs Lore to escape immediately.

Fern searches for Lore CH137

Fern searches for Lore among the mana and noise throughout the Empire.

With Wolf's arrows no longer posing a threat, Fern attempts to detect Lore's movements but struggles due to the nun's mana concealment and the objects giving off mana and noise throughout the Empire. As Lore runs, she realizes Frieren's party also has a Priest among them given they were able to trace back to her through the coins, and she disposes of the coins. Wolf tells Lore to continue running, but Lore expresses her exhaustion, and Wolf says she should ask Schritt to carry her. Lore tells him Schritt was throwing up from alcohol and asks Gazelle to come carry her instead. Wolf shoots an arrow at Frieren's party and tells Gazelle he needs to stay and keep their opponents backed into a corner.

Frieren checks on an unconscious Stark, and Sein tells her he pushed himself too far after the poisoning. She attempts to locate the enemy and thinks about how both she and the warriors' priest are struggling to identify each others' presence with mana detection, given that Fern is blended in with the mana from the fireworks. However, Frieren acknowledges someone skilled enough can find Fern, and she wonders if their enemies are able to communicate about Fern.

Seizure of Holy Punishment CH137

Lore tries to take out Fern with her Seizure of Holy Punishment spell.

Lore manages to detect Fern and prepares a spell against her. Frieren concludes that if the warriors aren't able to communicate with each other, the one that can use mana detection will have to take care of Fern. Lore casts Seizure of Holy Punishment to seal Fern's mana usage and kill her with a fall, but Fern detects her immediately upon casting the spell and fires Zoltraak at her. Fern's spell is faster, and she knocks Lore unconscious.

Neu notices the battle CH137

Neu notices the battle between Fern and Lore.

Frieren and Sein witness the fight, and Sein asks if they would draw attention. Frieren assures him that only those with skill would notice it with the fireworks going on, but Sein brings up that those are the individuals they are trying to avoid. Frieren agrees, and they prepare to escape. Übel and Land notice the battle and also figure they should leave. Elsewhere, Neu watches the fight, and Kanone instructs Weg to inspect the damage. Weg asks where Captain Fräse is, as she should be the one responsible for maintaining public order and handling paperwork during the Foundation Festival instead of them. Kanone tells Weg to enjoy the boredom while it lasts, as Fräse's intentions are difficult to understand and only become clear when they're in the middle of a hellish battlefield. Wolf and Gazelle find the unconscious Lore, and Wolf advises they retreat. Gazelle remarks how Lore's magic-resistant armor saved her life, but the enemy may have also kept her alive on purpose.

Frieren meets up with Sense and Falsch to deliver her findings. Falsch considers the problems the presence of a priest implies, as the Empire's advances in magic may mean they have deciphered more of the Goddess's magic than other priests. Sense thanks Frieren for her contributions, and Frieren reassures her that she will continue helping with the mission. However, she reminds her that Fern is the first-class mage, so she will follow her. Sense apologizes for dragging Frieren in, and Frieren reminds Sense that she does not need to lose her composure or be afraid, as Serie will not be assassinated.

Sense compares Frieren and Serie CH137

Sense compares the similarities between Frieren and Serie.

After Frieren leaves, Sense comments on the similarities between Frieren and Serie to Falsch. She brings up the assassination of the Great Mage Minus by a human warrior, which led to the spread of the knowledge that elves are not truly immortal. As such, Serie, who could die the next day despite having such a long lifespan, should be protected even at the cost of their own lives.

Sein reflects on his adventures CH137

Sein reflects on his adventures as a priest for other parties.

Frieren, Fern, and Stark bring Sein up to date with the situation. He congratulates Frieren and Fern on achieving first-class mage status, but Fern tells him Frieren failed, which confuses him. Sein talks about his travels, throughout which he had received the aid of multiple parties, and his search eventually led him to the Empire. He laments about the lack of a lady among all the parties he was a priest in, but Frieren tells him he was lucky to travel with such reliable adventurers in the dangerous Northern Lands. Sense arrives shortly after to tell Frieren's party that Übel and Land have returned with a report and Lineal's information, which should help them identify their enemies.

Serie reminisces about Flamme CH137

Serie reminisces about Flamme as she enters the Empire.

At the entrance of Eiseberg, Serie arrives in a carriage. She reflects on her time in the past with Flamme and comments that she can't believe she is visiting the magic civilization built by Flamme under such circumstances.
