Escort Mission () (えい) () (らい) Goei irai? is the one hundred and eleventh chapter of Kanehito Yamada and Abe Tsukasa's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

Summary[]

The next day, the Hero Party escort a merchant to a nearby village. They are attacked by humanoid wolf monsters that use human tactics on the way, and the Hero Party all display their teamwork and the unique roles that they play in the team, such as Eisen with his monstrous durability. After escorting the merchant, they then continue onward in Kino Pass looking for information about the Monument of the Goddess.

Plot Details[]

The next day, the Hero Party escort the merchant. Himmel apologizes to Frieren. Frieren tells him she doesn't mind as she's not in a hurry, and she knows all too well that with the Northern Plateau swarming with monsters, somebody needs to take escort missions. The entire party is surprised by Frieren's altruism, but she quickly returns things to normal by telling them that she personally wouldn't bother to accept the escort missions.

Heiter, noting that Frieren hasn't changed, asks her whether she's still continuing her journey in the future. When she answers that she is, Eisen asks her what she's journeying for and whether she has a party. Frieren tells them that she cannot tell them, as she's not sure how the information would change the future. However, she does tell them that Heiter and Eisen have done a great job. This prompts Himmel to ask Frieren what about him; she tells him that he's encouraged her, which makes Himmel happy to hear. He then jests that having so many statues made of himself was worth it, which causes Frieren and Heiter to reflect on how long the statues took to make. Though he apologizes, Himmel tells them he won't stop as he needs his beauty to be accurately preserved for posterity, leading Eisen to wonder where his passion comes from.

Further down the road, the party is attacked by a large number of enemies that Frieren detects with her mana detection. Himmel blocks an arrow shot by humanoid wolf monsters. The monsters advance on the party, with the ones wielding bows and arrows staying in the backline and others with shields and swords serving as vanguards. While the merchant hides inside the wagon, the Hero Party engages with the wolf monsters.

The party takes note of the attack strategies of the monsters, and Heiter comments that the reason why monsters in the Northern Plateau are tricky to fight is because they will pick up strategies from watching humans fight. Himmel tells Frieren to cover him and tells Heiter to guide the wagon back, but Frieren notices that they are being ambushed from the back by wolf monsters with spears.

Eisen quickly leaps in to defend Heiter, and the spearheads crumble against his body. Eisen, with nary a scratch on him, then declares to the party to leave the rear to him, and Himmel tells him he can always count on him to have his back.

The Hero Party proceed to defeat the rest of the monsters and escort the merchant the rest of the way to the village. After the battle, Heiter is freaked out by Eisen's monstrous durability again, and Frieren comments that she missed this. Himmel then thanks Frieren for her teamwork. Though it has become so natural to her at this point, it is Himmel and the others who originally taught her how to fight as a party, and recalling this, Frieren thanks Himmel. Though he doesn't exactly know what she is thanking him for, he seems to understand, and tells her she is welcome. The party then continues onward in the Kino Pass while bantering all the while.
