Time for Retribution (むく) いの (とき) Mukui no toki? is the one hundred and third chapter of Kanehito Yamada and Abe Tsukasa's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

Summary[]

Right after Denken fires a condensed Zoltraak spell at Macht, he collapses, and Macht leaves heavily injured, intending to regroup. While he walks through the alleyway, bleeding, he notices that Solitär is dead. Macht recalls his conversation with Solitär just a few hours prior. She had told him that no matter how eccentric his beliefs were, he was still a demon in the end. Macht begins to feel embarrassed that he still fears death, just like other demons. Macht had previously believed that he would accept death if he was able to feel the emotions he was looking for, but as his mana is flowing away, he is ashamed that he is attempting to flee. At this thought, Macht smiles, and wonders where he is exactly fleeing to, as he will not survive either way.

Macht approaches Glück, who is still standing where he was turned into a statue before, and Macht kneels in front of him. The two smoke together, and Macht regrets that he was unable to understand the emotions he was looking for. Glück apologies for being unable to fulfill his promise to follow Macht to the depths of hell until Macht was successful. Denken appears, stumbling towards Macht, and Macht threatens to hold Glück hostage. Glück tells Macht that he is truly beyond help, and asks Denken to put Macht out of his misery. Denken fires a spell, killing Macht, and city guards rush over. Glück stands over Macht’s disappearing mana, calling him a friend, and stating that he enjoyed the time they spent together.

Plot Details[]

Right after Denken fires a condensed Zoltraak spell at Macht, he declares that the battle has ended in a tie, and collapses on the ground. Macht begins to leave, intending to regroup, knowing that Frieren is still alive. As he walks, he braces himself against the walls of the alleyway, leaving blood streaked on the walls. Macht gazes at the citizens, who are alive and talking, and continues forward through the crowd. Shocked citizens ask him what had happened to him. Macht brushes them off, claiming that he is fine, and continues down another alleyway. Macht notices that Solitär has died, and recalls their conversation immediately after the Great Barrier of the Golden Land had been broken.

After Solitär had declared her intention to assist him, Macht had asked Solitär why she insisted on helping him, when she does not believe that coexistence is possible. Solitär stated that she wanted Macht to change his mind, knowing that the Demon King’s wish for the same ideal had led to the death of all of her friends and drove demons nearly to extinction. Macht had questioned her further, stating that it would be easier for Solitär to kill him rather than to convince him. Solitär admitted that she originally came to kill Macht, but was too scared to fight him, and unwilling to risk her life for the demon race. Solitär ends the conversation by saying that no matter how deeply or abnormally Macht thinks, they are all still demons in the end.

After recalling this conversation, Macht feels embarrassed that he would feel fear towards death. Ever since he had equipped the Stone Bracelet of Servitude, he had believed that as long as he could feel emotions he had never experienced, and if he could coexist, and even if he had to face retribution, he would not mind dying. He begins to feel shame that he is clinging to life and running away, just as other demons would. Macht stops and smiles, wondering where he could be fleeing to if he’s not going to survive. Macht continues to walk toward Glück, and kneels in front of him. Glück asks Macht where he received such a wound, and Macht states that it seems that it’s time for him to receive retribution.

Glück lights a cigarette, and offers Macht to join him. Glück lights another cigarette for Macht, and Macht tells Glück that he wasn’t able to understand a thing. Glück apologizes to Macht for being unable to fulfill his promise to follow Macht to the depths of hell to help him find the emotions he sought. Glück mentions that he was sincere with those words, and Macht replies in understanding.

Macht and Glück see Denken approaching, bracing himself against the wall as he walks with a tired expression. Macht smiles, telling him that he doesn’t know when to give up. Glück recognizes the aged Denken, and Macht warns Denken to stop, threatening to kill Glück if he does not. Glück tells Macht that he is truly beyond help, and Macht forlornly looks downwards. Glück walks away from Macht, and asks Denken to put him out of his misery. Denken blasts Macht into dust, and city guards rush over to Glück, asking what had happened. Glück commands them to take Denken to be healed at the church, calling him the hero who saved Weise. To Macht’s fading mana, Glück calls him his friend and says he truly enjoyed the time they spent together. After Macht fully dissolves into mana particles, only the Stone Bracelet of Servitude remains.
